Paper 1: Productive skills—writing
This examination is externally set and externally assessed. It consists of a choice from three tasks with a variety of audiences, contexts and purposes. Each task is based on a different theme from the syllabus.
Students write a response of 250–400 words to one of the tasks, choosing a text type from among those listed in the examination instructions.
The aim of this component is to assess the ability to communicate in writing for a variety of purposes. In order to fulfill the requirements of this assessment component, students need to show, through their use of text type, register and style, that they understand the concepts of audience, context, purpose, meaning and variation, and can apply them to their written language. (IB Guide, 2018)
Students will be assessed mainly with the following rubrics. Scores for each assignment will be found in Canvas. Students will meet with Sra. Schulze after each assessment and discuss and reflect on growth, accomplishments, reflection and plans for upward movement. There will be a conversion table, but students should concentrate on how to improve their skills in order to move from one level of the rubric to the next. The conversion table will be displayed in the classroom and is open subject to changes, as Sra. Schulze sees necessary. Other rubrics may be used during the year. If so, students will be told ahead of time and such rubrics will be uploaded in Canvas for each individual assignment.
